Patient Care Technician

The Patient Care Technician Program prepares students to provide direct patient care under the guidance of nurses, physicians and other Healthcare professionals in a variety of healthcare settings, including long-term and acute care facilities.

Career Information

The Patient Care Technician Program prepares students to provide direct patient care under the guidance of nurses, physicians and other Healthcare professionals in a variety of healthcare settings, including long-term and acute care facilities.

As a Certified Patient Care Technician, a student may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Provide direct patient care to include hygiene and comfort measures, vital signs, and other activities of daily living
  • Obtain ECG (electrocardiograph) readings
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures

According to the 2024 U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Occupational Outlook the job outlook for Patient Care Technicians will increase 4% from 2022 – 2032 as fast as the average for all occupations. The DOL provides the estimated annual salary for Patient Care Technicians within Texas on average is $35,700.

Is there a certification offered?

Upon successful completion of all courses, students are eligible to apply to take a national exam certification as a Patient Care Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and as an ECG Technician. In addition, students are able to apply to take the State of Texas Nurse Aide certification examination through the Texas Health and Human Services. Additional requirements to be eligible to take the exams may apply.

What does a Patient Care Technician do?

A Patient Care Technician may:

  • Provide basic patient care under nurse of healthcare provider supervision.
  • Acquire, distribute, and administer patient care supplies.
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms.
  • Accommodate any additional patient needs.
  • Obtain ECG readings and monitor vital signs.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures.

How long does it take to complete my program?

The Patient Care Technician Program is a Level I Certificate program and can be completed in two semesters.
